Hostivice Ponds

The Hostivice Ponds (Litovický, Břevský, and Kalý) are a protected natural monument offering pleasant walks in a peaceful environment. It is an ideal place for relaxation, bird watching, and enjoying nature. The Hostivice Ponds educational trail will introduce you to the local fauna and flora. The trail runs around the three largest ponds of the system (Litovický, Kala, and Břevský), which were constructed as early as the 14th century. They served an important function – during the reign of Emperor Rudolf II., they were the water source for the gardens of Prague Castle.

The entire area of the Hostivice Ponds is an important nesting site for birds, which you can observe here.
The Hostivice Ponds educational trail also offers visitors a bird’s eye view of the pond – the Czech Union for Nature Conservation has built a birdwatching observatory here. You will find it right at the shore of Litovický Pond.

The Nature Reserve Hostivice Ponds trail is approximately 2.5 km long and is accessible with strollers and scooters.

Velká Amerika Quarry – 17 km

The Velká Amerika Quarry is a partially flooded limestone quarry located near the village of Mořina. A yellow tourist trail, about 3 km long, leads directly from Mořina to the edge of the abandoned quarries, where you can enjoy truly breathtaking scenery. The quarry resembles the American canyon, but its name was not derived from its appearance, but rather from the method of earlier limestone extraction. When looking into the canyon, you will certainly recall a scene from the film *Limonádový Joe*, which was filmed here. The quarries of Mexico, Small America, and Big America, located in close proximity, still attract many adventurers. Although access is strictly prohibited, there have already been several fatal accidents here.

The Koněpruské Caves are the longest and certainly one of the most famous cave systems in the Czech Republic. They are worth visiting not only for their “longest” title. A specialty of the Koněpruské Caves are especially the so-called Koněpruské Roses, a whole series of valuable archaeological finds, and a secret coin-minting workshop. In a section called the Mint, medieval counterfeit “silver” Hussite coins with the emblem of the Czech lion were made from copper sheet and amalgamated silver.
